The Best Five 1988 Topps Baseball Cards & 1988 Topps Cards Checklist

This set has the action image in the middle, the team name at the top, and minimal graphics. This set, is coincidentally, one of the sets with the biggest stars in it! This is especially true for the rookie cards.

The Best Five 1988 Topps Baseball Cards & 1988 Topps Cards Checklist

Inside this pack, you will find Jim Abbott and Tom Glavine, as well as others. Oh, but let us not forget about other stars like Bo Jackson, Nolan Ryan, or even Don Mattingly. Such an awesome pack, right?

So, let’s take a look over the best 5 cards from the 198 Topps baseball set, and while we are here, we want to add in some honorable mentions too!

The Top 5 1988 Topps Baseball Cards Of All Time

In our opinion, these are the absolute top 5 cards from the 1988 Topps baseball set. Of course, there are others that are also great, hence our honorable mentions, but stick around to hear why they are all so great!

#1. 1988 Topps Tom Glavine RC [#779]

Let’s start off with the Tom Glavine rookie card, this might be one of the first picks for any collector who wants to get something out of the set.

#779 is a very special card. The set contains 795 cards overall, so it was actually quite close to the end. However, more importantly, it is Tom Glavine’s rookie card!

Tom Glavine was one of the biggest stars in baseball from the 1990s and 2000s, and of course, since he was voted into the Hall of Fame, this card is even more special.

One of the best things about this card is that it is not even that expensive, thanks to high print running, and wide availability, this card is actually up for grabs pretty cheap. You can probably find one in good condition that won’t break the bank!

#2. 1988 Topps Tiffany Don Mattingly [#300]

The next best in our opinion is the Don Mattingly card. This card is rarer than most other Topps cards from this year, which makes it something quite special.

By ‘88, Mattingly was already a very well-known player in baseball, and he was also one of the biggest stars of the time.

He won the AL MVP in ‘85, and after he was in All-Star teams from ‘84 until ‘89, his Topps cards were bound to be very popular among collectors.

With this in mind, this card is certain to be one of the most highly valued cards from this set. This card is the Tiffany version, which is more highly valued than the base card.

If you want a more affordable option then the base card will be more available and cheaper too!

#3. 1988 Topps Tiffany Nolan Ryan [#250]

If you have followed any baseball from the 80s and 90s then you are probably rather well acquainted with Nolan Ryan. Ryans structure in the game in ‘88 was massive.

He was already a very well-known player, and he had a very long career, by 1988 he was plying his trade with the Astros, and his career continued until ‘93 when he finally retired from the game.

His career lasted an impressive 27 years!

Nolan Ryan’s cards have always been very sought after by collectors, and this card is certainly no different at all.

Such as is with a majority of other cards you will find in this set, you will probably find it pretty easily. There are many copies of this card available due to high print runs, and thankfully, due to this, prices won’t be too extortionate either.

However, much like our last mention, be aware we are looking at a Topps Tiffany card, not a base card version, so it will likely be much more expensive than the base version. If your budget is smaller, the base version is just as cool!

#4. 1988 Topps Traded Jim Abbott RC [#1T]

Next up is a card that is a bit different from the rest. This Jim Abbott card is somewhat different, as it is a part of the Topps Traded sub-set. It is also from the time when Abbott represented the USA. This means you will not see him in the Angel’s outfit.

At the same time, this is also his rookie card, which makes it extra special, and thanks to that fact, it is also one of the more valuable baseball cards from the set (see also “Most Valuable Michael Jordan, Baseball Cards“).

This is also available for a fairly cheap price, so Jim Abbott lovers can celebrate. The cheap price is thanks to the high print run of this card.

#5. 1988 Topps Bo Jackson [#750]

Our final of the top five is Bo Jacksons 1988 Topps card. Bo Jackson is not only unique in baseball, but in sports overall. He was a rare player who played baseball and football professionally. A rare, and very talented athlete.

In ‘88, Jackson had his fingers in both pies, so you can actually find both baseball and football cards for this year. His football Topps card is a bit more available and popular than this one, which is a much harder find.

Jackson is also one of the most popular sporting figures from the last several decades as well, and the popularity of his cards pay homage to that.

If you want a great card from this set, we would suggest picking this one.

Our Honorable Mentions

Our Honorable Mentions

Now that we know who the top 5 are from the ‘88 set, we want to reveal some other cards that you may wish to look into. These may not be the top 5, but they are surely worthy of a mention!

#580, 1988 Topps Mark McGwire

Our first honorable mention is card #580, which is the 1988 mark McGwire card. As you may know, McGwire is one of the biggest stars of this time, so it is hard to go wrong if you choose to get this card.

While it is not exactly the most valuable card there is, it’s worth considering.

#4T, Topps Traded Roberto Alomar RC

Another awesome choice card from this year would be Roberto Alomar. Alomar was one of the top prospects of 1988, and #4T is his rookie card. Since he was so popular in this year, and it’s his rookie card, you can see why it is one of the most popular from this set!

#42T, Topps Traded Mark Grace RC

Mark Grace was another major prospect from this set, and like Alomar, his rookie card is a popular choice among many. It could be considered to be one of the top alternatives for any fan or enthusiast to get from this set.

Checklist For 1988 Topps Baseball Cards

It is always worthwhile knowing what your options are, and most people have no idea which cards belong to which sets per year. There are so many baseball cards in the 1988 Topps set (see also “1981 Topps Joe Montana Rookie Card & It’s Worth“).

So, to save you a major headache, we have decided to create a checklist for you. If you fancy collecting them all, why not print them out and work your way through them. While they may not all be worth a lot, getting them all is the ultimate goal!

Overall

As you can see there are so many awesome cards for you to get in the 1988 Topps Baseball set, and getting them all could be nearly impossible! With nearly 1,000 total cards, it would most certainly be a challenge.

However, at least having the best of the best cards is a goal for most collectors like us, and our top 5 are most definitely the top choices.

Do you agree?

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is The Difference Between 1988 Score Glossy And Regular?

The 1988 Score glossy baseball set has 660 cards overall. Each of these cards measures 2 ½ inches by 3 ½ inches. The glossy version is completely identical to the Score’s regular issue, but it is coated in UV instead.

How Can I Tell If My Topps Tiffany Is 1988?

Tiffany cards will have 2 very distinguishable traits from other cards. One of these is the glossy front, making it easier to tell them apart from other Topps cards when looking at them in person.

The other is the white-card stock they are printed on, which is different to other Topps cards.

What Year Topps Cards Are The Most Valuable?

The record price paid for a Topps card was $12.6 million which was paid for a 1952 Mickey Mantle baseball card.

Are Topps Tiffany Cards Worth More?

Topps Tiffany baseball cards give collectors a more upscale option for a vast majority of sets from the Junk Wax Era. Between ‘84 and ‘91 Topps made a limited number of factory sets with better production value.

The secondary value or Tiffany Topps is that they are much more durable than their regular alternatives.
